As you know, my Dad died last summer after a multi-year bout with cancer.
<br><br>
I was lucky to be in Cave Creek, Arizona for his last months and have spent the last year handling his affairs, trying to guess his passwords, and considering how to best honor his passing.
<br><br>
Thanks to an amazing offer from his paragliding community (and some hints from him, too) I will be hosting a Celebration of Life for him in his favorite place (Hawai'i) doing his favorite pastime (paragliding). I think he would be pleased.
<br><br>
There will be snacks, sun, and plenty of Aloha.
<br><br>

</p><p class="MsoNormal">Why teach?</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Many years ago, when I watched some gliders run down a hill
and get flight, I was so excited to see this. I had been a paratrooper in the
Army and always wanted to fly again. I reached out to the skydiving community,
but they wanted to charge me extra for my bad static line Army habits and charge
my little brother less. I thought screw you guys. WTF? I’m a paratrooper, wtf
could you teach me about jumping out of an airplane? (hehe, I had no idea back
then).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuwnb2ud1LTK8ruV0pJG2VGpTKq3JF0gWGPqZK_t92Mn1gHZryqCtkLEf9INTHV-wJNR1nJE9-0ZvoqEP1UiMf8Pc_6xL6LNw8NvYK3nBL4KpMFcCpQzBZiTjfPS3o0Q8bNI4n-Ov2wi1QzuJWvtLfGr0dg28QPdXjCU2nBySmuzDPiBs/s612/Pete%20n%20Alex.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="612" data-original-width="612" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuwnb2ud1LTK8ruV0pJG2VGpTKq3JF0gWGPqZK_t92Mn1gHZryqCtkLEf9INTHV-wJNR1nJE9-0ZvoqEP1UiMf8Pc_6xL6LNw8NvYK3nBL4KpMFcCpQzBZiTjfPS3o0Q8bNI4n-Ov2wi1QzuJWvtLfGr0dg28QPdXjCU2nBySmuzDPiBs/s320/Pete%20n%20Alex.jpg" width="320"></a></div>I bought a wing and a harness, and no reserve. I rode a jet
ski to Catalina Island on the 4th of July in 1989 with my wing on my
back. I had no lessons except for watching my buddy Brian fly. I crashed that
Sunday and was paralyzed for a couple of months. I told myself that if I recovered,
I would do everything possible to make sure NO ONE EVER felt that pain I did
and that I would devote my life to teach people to fly paragliders without the
suffering I had endured. <p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Thirty-five years later and hundreds of students later I
fulfilled my mission. I also spent many years since 1995 launching and rescuing
paragliders when no-one else wanted to. As of 2021, I have successfully rescued
over 175 pilots and two fatal recoveries. John Clifford died in a river in
Pemberton that I found, and James Oroc (Aka Kiwi) we found in Eureka, NV last
year. Closure is an amazing life spirituality. It’s good for the living.<span></span></p><a href="http://www.windlines.net/2022/05/why-teach.html#more">Read more »</a>Gravityhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14574997933340807663noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20110414.post-56055035409301079702022-03-09T09:52:00.010-10:002022-04-14T23:16:33.274-10:00Notes from the Convergence (a Link-Up Manifesto)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh-IFrZ6FeO16l9Ddlq-YHO2SID_ATTw2s8l094Dim6Je5IGye5rxN9Wrex8if8AyMivoSyy6VMxYlpNERXDec4BnkoIB-kd-crqrElpEYk_1JRk62-CsaOH_j0E9yvjbylejP9R3qYrgzm8QTl0xjUBV5otsGlUlzuiQu3TpF010B9LbPGBKE=s3783" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2837" data-original-width="3783" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh-IFrZ6FeO16l9Ddlq-YHO2SID_ATTw2s8l094Dim6Je5IGye5rxN9Wrex8if8AyMivoSyy6VMxYlpNERXDec4BnkoIB-kd-crqrElpEYk_1JRk62-CsaOH_j0E9yvjbylejP9R3qYrgzm8QTl0xjUBV5otsGlUlzuiQu3TpF010B9LbPGBKE=w400-h300" width="400"></a></div><p>On most days, the central flatlands of O'ahu are not an inviting place to fly a paraglider. When the trades are blowing, ragged stacks of cumulus tumble over the Ko'olau range into the saddle that connects the Honolulu suburbs with the North Shore. Here they regain some form passing over subdivisions, solar farms and agriculture land before getting supercharged in the Waianae mountains. If the winds are strong, the hot turbulent soup is swept westward, out to sea in long cloud streets that mark our position long before the island itself can be sighted on the horizon. When the air is still, low pressure systems usually provide ample moisture that collects in the gulches and the vegetation, until the morning sun lights the fuse. By lunchtime the cumulonimbus are breathing deep and by afternoon the center of island is cast into shadow and rain.</p><span></span><a href="http://www.windlines.net/2022/03/notes-from-convergence-link-up-manifesto.html#more">Read more »</a>Patrickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08192122852936757083noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20110414.post-57655973173609549622022-02-19T21:22:00.001-10:002022-02-20T12:36:26.718-10:00(New Date): HPA Meeting and Party Saturday 3/5/2022<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhoUWQmbewGypfSo_4R-w63t4zcpm1lbekkc6ebkG8IXLbrWZRQ7zIP6bXR2lolBTdcJeQ0_UJEquKarZ1Gz-7pzNKucDfLNagb3xf89MHXHoudqLGP7ZdJSeGYmTtN4lA_G2Z427j9qiUr-cyLbGxQ0-dqyjADHmo8DcPxMBBQRJlFYYa4cC8=s4032" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhoUWQmbewGypfSo_4R-w63t4zcpm1lbekkc6ebkG8IXLbrWZRQ7zIP6bXR2lolBTdcJeQ0_UJEquKarZ1Gz-7pzNKucDfLNagb3xf89MHXHoudqLGP7ZdJSeGYmTtN4lA_G2Z427j9qiUr-cyLbGxQ0-dqyjADHmo8DcPxMBBQRJlFYYa4cC8=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br />Saturday, March 5, 2022, is the first meeting and party for the club for 2022. They say it will likely be closed through Memorial Day or longer.
Because they reached out to us with that call, our permit to fly there will depend on our cooperation. We can still launch there but we’ll need to land elsewhere. As of today, the parking lot across the highway on the mauka side of the park is still open.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20110414.post-42583458810907037812021-03-23T09:09:00.008-10:002021-03-23T09:29:50.313-10:00Coming Up For Air: a slice of Waianae leeside<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdnzMpp_krOZHf7tNh_g0XZuQfllMFQt1a0jmAb2w0bqT-TyivCvcKO_8-MA0mK7Ha3safgVzn1xqeYXTSTVdq9xL3d0yPPKfYzDwnF1Y2GQNVdx-OT3aT8eByf4qmFGksuFak/s600/ezgif.com-optimize.gif" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="338" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdnzMpp_krOZHf7tNh_g0XZuQfllMFQt1a0jmAb2w0bqT-TyivCvcKO_8-MA0mK7Ha3safgVzn1xqeYXTSTVdq9xL3d0yPPKfYzDwnF1Y2GQNVdx-OT3aT8eByf4qmFGksuFak/s320/ezgif.com-optimize.gif" width="320"></a></div>Short version: We flew the Knob on a weird day.</div><p></p><div>Long version: For those who appreciate a no-holds-barred geek-out on my approach to site assessment, read on.</div><div><br></div><span></span><a href="http://www.windlines.net/2021/03/coming-up-for-air-slice-of-waianae.html#more">Read more »</a>Patrickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08192122852936757083noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20110414.post-19485098860421266972021-01-18T20:46:00.004-10:002021-01-19T09:15:08.242-10:00A Solid Winter Day: Achieving Critical Mass on the North Shore of Oahu<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNZP8eRRJr3HTw0Qz6HYcArE8FOahRDpDw2gUdQbMNszkjL0mHD7cu-w3bmw9PvAhv1sc926RFEtlQ9Zo1s0wUtHaeTUSsYcHkignHxQD1EWNXy7h82bb2p5Vs1P3L-A-yYe-Z/s2048/IMG_4278.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNZP8eRRJr3HTw0Qz6HYcArE8FOahRDpDw2gUdQbMNszkjL0mHD7cu-w3bmw9PvAhv1sc926RFEtlQ9Zo1s0wUtHaeTUSsYcHkignHxQD1EWNXy7h82bb2p5Vs1P3L-A-yYe-Z/s320/IMG_4278.jpg" width="320"></a></div>Ninety minutes after stepping off launch my plan was going swimmingly. A small gaggle of pilots was established over a nice trigger halfway between the front lift band and the back ridge line, and I had searched out from the center a bit to find a punchy little core that held together long enough to beam me up to the high point of my flight. There, at 2,600 feet just shy of the back ridge, it would be an easy glide north, high over the complex system of ridge fingers and gullies until I could link one or two more climbs to access the high ground between Three Fingers and Mount Ka'ala. The fact that the expert pilots in the group didn't join me in my obviously better climb did in fact dimly register in my decision making, but Who's The Expert Now? Yeah!<p></p><a href="http://www.windlines.net/2021/01/a-solid-winter-day-achieving-critical.html#more">Read more »</a>Patrickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08192122852936757083noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20110414.post-9981003502378110102020-12-23T14:04:00.001-10:002021-01-18T20:47:49.720-10:00The 1/6th Million Dollar Man<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcdFXzONcaTuLxebCmjKZiNV4xTqAefGL0lAIrkQboYlIgYLFUoDn6p-t2wUvb6AXHteU0WwQ4k7Oi1QNXqVDil0z-Z3u7KuRpQIsaHNxWAcqUjTYJnVQnP-QOFMcjjKae5slhYA/s2048/Manics2020-.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcdFXzONcaTuLxebCmjKZiNV4xTqAefGL0lAIrkQboYlIgYLFUoDn6p-t2wUvb6AXHteU0WwQ4k7Oi1QNXqVDil0z-Z3u7KuRpQIsaHNxWAcqUjTYJnVQnP-QOFMcjjKae5slhYA/w343-h320/Manics2020-.jpg" width="343"></a></div>As many of you have heard, I had a paragliding accident mid November while buzzing close to the hill below the Manics Lookout. After twenty years of flying paragliders and 57 years of generally being risky in life, I got bit.<p></p><p>The basic cause of the accident was a little bit of bad conditions and a lot of pilot error. Conditions were switchy that day, from east, to light north and back to east. I hiked my acro wing over to Manics putting up streamers showing a light north flow, thinking I might get a little parapark action. A bunch of pilots were there including Matt and Marcel.</p><p><span></span></p><a href="http://www.windlines.net/2020/12/the-16th-million-dollar-man.html#more">Read more »</a>firedave2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07212702155886596067noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20110414.post-29822919227406680142020-07-22T13:46:00.001-10:002020-07-22T21:18:52.728-10:00Veil into The Heavens<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_HgVUf-OxAWubMmUNBPF_tEfamGYLIvIA2nEW5anPpLydj-t2-Y8NsXCn62QM-r6CJx_8F09yqRI_T5YXIaAqdg4vmXEj3IK-UEETCIGEj3hDePkc1dUH7eKhBsjUDctenkg9/s1600/VeilofClouds.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_HgVUf-OxAWubMmUNBPF_tEfamGYLIvIA2nEW5anPpLydj-t2-Y8NsXCn62QM-r6CJx_8F09yqRI_T5YXIaAqdg4vmXEj3IK-UEETCIGEj3hDePkc1dUH7eKhBsjUDctenkg9/s320/VeilofClouds.jpeg" width="320"></a>Well, it has been awhile since any ink has been added to this flight log of the Flying Monkeys. I wanted to address a scourge of modern paragliders in Hawaii. It used to be that you could talk to anyone clearly on their radio at almost any time. Then the flying community was flooded with cheap Chinese radios and since paragliders do love cheap stuff, especially for not essential items, they were all over them.<br />
<br />
Lately, I notice that it has been hard to contact another pilot on the radio. I thought it was because my hearing was really going bad, but then Reaper comes over the radio crystal clear. Reaper uses old style radios. Now lots of pilots all have dead batteries, poor transmission, unintelligible wind noise, it might even be time to do away with radios all together. Even Alex was hard to hear for a while and he is presidential, but her seems to have gotten over it lately.<br />
<br />
The point is I would hope people in the future might not waste money on a cheap radio that sometimes works and get something solid and dependable. Oddly enough my radio that has lasted all these years is an old VX-150, the other radios I have had have all come and gone.<br />
<br />
Flying is funner when talking with friends!firedave2http://www.blogger.com/profile/07212702155886596067noreply@blogger.com5
