Rescue courtesy call reminder
Anytime there is a botched launch or landing that might be mistakenly interpreted by any witnesses as a possible incident, please remember to call the Fire Department at 523-4411 to let them know you do not need any assistance. It's also good to call in advance if you are planning to launch anywhere where we normally get false alarm calls (Tomato launches at Makapuu, all Koko launches). Just give the guys your cell number so they can follow up with you if they get any calls. Please put the phone number on your cell phone now so it's there when you need it. You can also just call 911 to call off a potential response if you don't have the direct number.

If you are in an emergency don't hesitate to call 911! So have your phone handy when you're flying.... and injury or hanging from a branch for instance could make the backpack unreachable, so have in your pocket or radio harness. BTW, radio with fully charged batterie is also recommended!

The 523-4411 number is the fire alarm bureau private line for personal calls, so it is good to let the guys know what you are doing. Such as " Hi, my name is Dave and I am flying paraglider at Makapuu behind Sea Life Park. I just put my glider in a tree, I am fine, but if anyone calls about the glider in the tree don't send anyone. You can call me back at 382-0568"
If there are fire trucks, ambulances, police cars and they are looking your way, then you need to call 911 and ask for "Fire" when they ask "Police, Fire or Ambulance?" since they will be too busy to answer the private number. Let them know who you are and that you are okay.
Another seperate thing we have going on is that the Police are getting forwarded the rescue calls. Fire and EMS already know not to come, but noone is informing HPD. I have been at Makapuu a few times recently when HPD has shown up looking for the downed paraglider. We either have to have fire notify HPD or make a separate call to 911 for HPD.
